FileMaker 21.1 is available!
Claris has just announced the immediate availability of FileMaker 21.1! Check out their website here.
Among all the new features you should know about—which I covered in detail on the 1-more-thing blog, some are server related and are very interesting to know as a fmcloud.fm client.
—some server-related updates are especially valuable for fmcloud.fm clients.
FileMaker Server 21.1 (aka FileMaker Server 2024 .1)
First, a bit of housekeeping. Yes! Version 21.1 is already available on fmcloud.fm. You can request your server upgrade here. As always, it’s free, and keep in mind that should you encounter any issue, it takes about 30 seconds to downgrade as well, so there’s no real risk.
And… we’re taking this opportunity to officially launch our Admin Console, packed with exclusive features (available for Starter and Pro plans).
Peform Script on Server… on the Server
This is the big one. Previously, a script already running on the server couldn’t call another script on the server using Perform Script on Server.
That’s no longer the case. And since a script no longer has to wait for another script to finish, you can now trigger parallel processes.
Of course, this demands more from the server, but that’s where our Docker-based architecture shines. As Nick Lightbody demonstrated in his study, our service is 400% more robust than a typical Windows VM at a comparable price when it comes to parallel script sessions.
HTTPS Tunnelling
This feature has been available on Linux -and therefore on fmcloud.fm- for a while, but it’s now also available on other platorfms, macOS and Windows.
Keep in mind that with us, you can use both ways on the same server: if only some client machines are unable to connect using port 5003, we can enable https tunelling just for them. The rest of your team can still use port 5003.
Web Direct: support of keystroke triggers
onLayoutKeystroke and onObjectKeystroke are now supported on Web Direct, but only for the following keys: Enter, Return, Escape.
OData / Data API limitation removed
Feel free to use your server now without wondering if it will have an impact on the price. Your FileMaker license does not limit the amount of data you can pull from your own server anymore.
Also, OData keeps improving. You can now use aliases in the request. Here’s the FileMaker OData documentation
